A 2022 study by researchers at The Australian National University has exposed more of the dangers of Australia’s food delivery industry. The study, titled “Necrocapitalism in the Gig Economy: The Case of Platform Food Couriers in Australia,” highlights the dangerous working conditions faced by delivery riders and the industry’s resistance to safety regulations.
One-in-three riders reported being injured on the job, while over two-thirds feared for their safety while working. The pressure to meet unrealistic delivery times often led to unsafe riding practices, further exacerbating the risks.
