Road Safety Barriers – are you ready for MASH? (5 things to do)
1. Only use MASH compliant steel rail barriers, permanent concrete barriers and guard fence end terminals and crash cushions (see VicRoads approved products list below)
2. Continue to use approved wire rope safety barriers, but adopt a dynamic deflection and working width of 3.0m (Victorian advice only)
3. Keep using NCHRP350 temporary barriers, bollards and TMAs, but start preparing for the transition to MASH (no date yet on this changeover)
4. Follow which products become ‘legacy’ and maintain them like-for-like unless they are damaged significantly, in which case you should swap them for an approved product (MASH tested).
5. Don’t interchange between NCHRP350 and MASH (design to construct) unless you redesign or get it assessed. The designer may have made decisions based on NCHRP350-tested products and the design may not achieve MASH performance requirements.
