Australia and New Zealand are on the international stage as leaders in road safety barrier expertise this week as it’s revealed more than 600 local road designers, technicians and engineers have undertaken specialist barrier training since late 2016.
Kenn Beer, Safe System Solutions’ Principal Engineer, presented a paper co-authored by Technical Design Lead Jamie Robertson and Training Manager Kathy Doukouris on the development and deployment of road safety barrier training at this week’s 2nd International Conference on Roadside Safety in Orlando, Florida.
He said road safety barriers play a key role in reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads and it is important that professionals are supported to contribute to safer a road system through up-to-date specialised training.
“Road safety barriers have been installed across Australia and New Zealand because they’re proven to reduce the risk of serious injury and fatalities on our roads, and our Safe System Solutions barrier training is helping industry keep up with the rapid rise of this road infrastructure” Mr Beer said.
“A recent workforce capability analysis by Austroads emphasised the need to address gaps in road/highway design skills – and our training is a crucial response to one aspect of this skills shortage.
“The training bridges the gap between theory and practical application through hands-on exercises where participants can truly understand how to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
“Participants’ overwhelming feedback is that there’s been considerable improvements in their knowledge and abilities associated with road safety barriers.”
Safe System Solutions’ Road Safety Barrier training is delivered as an interactive face-to-face workshop, with the next trainings coming up in Sydney on 24 July and Melbourne on 28 August.
