Scania assisted Safe System Solutions to deliver our recent Road Design for Heavy Vehicles training in Sydney, with their experienced driver trainer sharing first-hand insights from the truck cabin.

Scania driver trainer, Peter Koutelis, took training participants for a ride along in a V8-powered prime mover hooked up to a single trailer during our training with Transport for New South Wales in Sydney on 23 July.

Kenn Beer, Safe System Solutions Principal Engineer, said the practical component of the training gives practitioners first-hand experience of the concerns and challenges faced by heavy vehicle drivers on our roads.

“Our Road Design for Heavy Vehicles training course examines design standards, traffic engineering and road safety with a focus on the needs of heavy vehicles from the truck cabin perspective,” he said.

“With Scania’s experienced driver sharing their insights from the truck cabin, Transport for NSW participants were able to fully appreciate the challenges of driving from a truck driver’s perspective and how best to manage those challenges when designing our road network.”

Designed for state and local government personnel, engineers, planners, designers, traffic managers and road safety practitioners, the course explores unique heavy vehicle road design issues – including swept paths, sight distances, geometric design elements, rollover prevention and other road safety issues.
