To create a Safe System road environment requires managing kinetic energy levels in crashes to within tolerable levels. This is a big challenge when we consider the biomechanics of injury for motorcyclists.
Today our Principal Engineer, Kenn Beer, presented at Safety 2022 in Adelaide, on what is required to create frangible (break-away) roadside sign poles that are designed to prevent serious injury to motorcyclists.
Working with Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and the Department of Transport (Vic), we have been investigating the occurrence of death and serious injury involving motorcyclists striking sign poles (much bigger killer of motorcyclists than wire rope safety barriers), and have been working to develop a frangible post system that holds up to Australian Standard wind loading.
