High speed Y-Intersection are one of the most hazardous intersection forms because:

⚠Drivers/riders from one leg may incorrect believe they have priority due to a see-through effect,
⚠The angle of entry means one leg must give way to vehicles on an oblique angle (known to cause compliance issues, harder for older road users to turn their head to that angle, harder for articulated vehicles to see through their cabin), and
⚠While the angle of impact may be less severe than a right angle, there is the potential for high-speed head-on crashes.

To improve alignment with Safe System principles, the Y-Intersection should be closed, converted into a roundabout, or in the interim as a supporting treatment squared up to a T-intersection.
