When designing roadside barriers, there are many factors to consider within the context of the site. One important trade-off is between the stiffness of the barrier system and its offset from the edgeline.

A more flexible barrier system typically reduces occupant deceleration (which translates to lower injury severity), but it requires more deflection area behind the barrier. On the other hand, more rigid systems need larger deflection zones, which can push the barrier closer to the edgeline.

However, placing barriers close to the edgeline comes with a few downsides, including: nuisance hits. These are minor impacts where drivers can continue their journey without stopping, but they can lead to significant maintenance costs depending on the barrier system used.

Striking the right balance between safety, functionality, and maintenance is an ongoing challenge in barrier design. We cover this in detail in our 2-day road safety barrier design course. Check out the details here: https://safesystemsolutions.com.au/training-workshops/
