Pedestrians face frequent, varied, and high-severity risks in urban areas, particularly at intersections. These risks aren’t just due to crossing the road; intersections are also high-risk points where vehicles may leave the road unexpectedly – whether avoiding other vehicles, misjudging turns, or making last-minute route decisions.
One effective way to improve pedestrian safety at large signalised intersections is by slowing vehicles at these high-risk locations. An evaluation of seven raised signalised intersections and raised safety platforms on major arterial roads in Melbourne revealed that pedestrians were the biggest winners. The risk of serious injuries was reduced by an impressive 18 – 56% (Cairney et al., 2021).
