Drivers miss traffic signals. They miss signals at intersections, but they are even more prone to missing them when they are at pedestrian crossings. Why? The road environment often creates and natural avenue effect where drivers vision is focused on the continuation of the road or features in the distance rather than the immediate crossing point.

So what can be done to enhance the effectiveness of midblock pedestrian operated signals? Some ideas:

Primary Treatment:

Raised signalised crossing. This is highly effective at enhancing the vision of the crossing point, slowing vehicles on the approach and improving compliance. Added bonus – if things go wrong the severity of any incident is lower.

Supporting Treatment:

Mast arms. Because the signal can sometimes be masked by other vehicles, adding mast arms can assist in lessening overshoot.
