Larger vehicles exhibit significant track shift, a phenomenon where the rear axle trajectory diverges from the front axle path due to their axle spacing. This spacing, measured from the centre of the rear trailer axle to the centre of the lead axle, directly influences the degree of off-tracking.

Off-tracking impacts vehicle movement in both low-speed (intersections and access points) and high-speed (highway curves) environments. In intersections, excessive off-tracking can encroach upon crosswalks and pedestrian areas and also impact road furniture (as can be seen in this video). On highway curves, it can lead to lane encroachment and create issues with opposing lanes.

Swept path analysis is crucial in designing new or upgraded roadways for larger vehicles. The analysis simulates the trajectories within the proposed infrastructure, ensuring adequate clearances and minimising the risk of off-tracking-related collisions with roadside furniture, pedestrians, or other vehicles.
