Safe System Snippet- Curves and Crashes: Understanding Road Factors

Vehicles crash to both the inside and outside of curves. The crashes to the inside of a curve usually involves an overcorrection and associated yawing. There are a series of road and roadside factors that influence crash rates on curves which include; curve radius, curve length, whether the curve is ‘out-of-context’, skid resistance, camber and terrain (downgrade, upgrade or flat). Of course, the operating speed of vehicles has a significant influence on the crashes, as does the appropriate warning and advisory signage.

Influencing all of these helps to keep vehicles on the road, but we need to remember that even if we get all this right, some people will still leave the road; thus an appropriate barrier system can reduce the severity of the incident.
