The inherent vulnerability of motorcycles is heightened by their reduced visibility. Motorcycles’ slender profile, susceptibility to environmental factors, and potential masking by other vehicles present challenges for other motorists seeing riders.

Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US estimates that 41% of all motorcycle crashes are attributed to driver failure to recognise or adequately assess the presence, distance, or speed of a motorcycle.

Apart from the size of a riders, there are also several environmental factors contribute to the lack of visibility of motorcycles:

Meteorological conditions: Glare from sunlight, obscuring fog, and heavy rain can compromise visual perception.

Dynamic visual obstructions: Moving traffic, can create temporary blind spots and impede accurate distance and speed assessment.

Static visual obstructions: Vegetation, roadside infrastructure, and parked vehicles can block sight to motorcycles.

Geometric road design: Bends and curves can distort visual cues, hindering accurate perception of a motorcycle’s trajectory and position.
