Active Advanced Warning Signs (AAWS) have been shown to reduce risk at railway level crossings by effectively alerting road users to the presence of a train in advance of the crossing. They are particularly useful and effective in adverse weather conditions, where sight distance to the crossing is compromised or when the angles of the road/rail crossing is skewed.  

In studies of AAWS in different road environments they were found they reduce risk by up to 35% (Polanis, 1999).
