In 2010 (while working at VicRoads) our Principal Engineer Kenn Beer trialed using variable height guideposts to change motorcyclists’ perception of curves to make them slow down and take a better line through the curve. Monash University Accident Research Centre was engaged to evaluate the study which showed mixed effectiveness (study link below).

This is one of the many types of perceptual countermeasures that have been trialled around the world.

Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd, in partnership with the Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR), have recently been engaged by Austroads to undertake further research and trials on perceptual countermeasures for motorcycle safety (SAG6222).
