Floating bus stops – solving the bike/bus leapfrog.
A ‘floating bus stop’ is created when the entire bus stop ‘floats’ between the traffic lanes and cycle paths. This creates separation of the cyclist lane from both vehicular traffic (including the bus) and from people walking on the footpath. Floating bus stops eliminate the leapfrog between cyclists and buses, remove most of squeeze points between cars and bikes, create better vision of cyclists by bus drivers and cause less frustration for both cyclists and drivers.
Remember to provide a design that clearly defines the bus waiting area, cycle and pedestrian paths. The location to cross the cycle path to reach the bus waiting area should also be appropriately marked.
