It is not reasonable to expect humans to process and react to large volumes of information in a short period of time. There is a strong correlation between decreasing driving performance and an increase driving workload, such as that from reading traffic signs (Bendak & Al-Saleh, 2010; Lyu et al., 2017; Bañares et al, 2018). Further, cognition difficulty and driver reaction time increases as the amount of information increases (Lyu et al., 2017), as shown in the graph below. Limiting the number of road signs to those that are absolutely necessary can help improve road safety.
