Regulatory Good Practice Across the Safe System

Regulation cuts across all aspects of the Safe System – speed management, infrastructure, enforcement and penalties, driver licensing, vehicle safety, and work-related road safety. 

It plays a critical role in achieving safety and equity outcomes, both in terms of how we promote safe choices and design for human error.  

This includes having the right regulatory settings in place (rules, regulations and standards), having the right tools (and using the right tool at the right time), and having effective processes and practices in place to support those regulatory activities.  

We provide specialist expertise in this area, underpinned by knowledge of regulatory good practice. This involves an understanding of the theory and application of risk-based and responsive regulation, and the role and use of regulation in achieving safety outcomes across the Safe System.  

We offer advice at a strategic level including to support the development of road safety and regulatory strategy, and technically in relation to specific areas of intervention or policy across the Safe System.
