The World Bank and the Government of Sindh are investing in a new Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system for Karachi, Pakistan. Motorcycle use in Karachi has increased from 36% to over 60% in the last 10 years and as a result so too have fatal and serious injuries. The BRT is intended to provide residents of Karachi an improved public transport option as a safer means to travel on their network. Richard Clayton and Dr. Tana Tan have been working with the World Bank on developing a better understanding of motorcycle safety issues along the BRT system and in Karachi by consulting with stakeholders in Karachi this week. The findings will then be used to update and improve provincial and city legislation around motorcycle use and safety.
