Best practice example – Wonthaggi raised intersection.
When the intersection of the Bass Highway and Korumburra Road was to be upgraded, Regional Roads Victoria – Gippsland took the bold (and ethically responsible) step to protect the travelling community from road trauma by installing a raised intersection alongside the traffic signals.
Traditionally this intersection would have been fitted with traffic signals only, and there would be a residual risk (and associated death and serious injury) from red light runners and those misjudging the intersection.
Traffic signals reduce the likelihood of crashes, the raised intersection address the severity by reducing the speed at the conflict points. This is Safe System in action.
