Motorcyclists face a significantly higher risk on the road network compared to other road users.

Several factors contribute to this heightened vulnerability:

  • Smaller size and visibility: Motorcycles are harder for drivers to see, especially in blind spots or when navigating busy traffic.
  • Lack of protection: Unlike car occupants, motorcyclists have no external protection to absorb the force of a crash, leaving them far more exposed to serious injuries.
  • Instability: Motorcycles are inherently less stable than vehicles with four wheels, making them more prone to losing control in adverse conditions or when encountering hazards like loose gravel or uneven road surfaces.
  • Environmental and road conditions: Poor road surface quality, wet weather, or sudden changes in conditions pose greater risks to motorcycles than to other vehicles.

Recognising these challenges, Safe System Solutions, on behalf of the Victorian Government, has developed the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly package.

This resource offers practical guidance and actionable strategies for creating safer environments for motorcyclists. You can download the recently updated Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly Guide for free, here: https://www.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-07/Making-roads-motorcycle-friendly.pdf
