Closing median openings is one of the treatments we recommend in the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly guidelines (download it free here: https://lnkd.in/gnFcWptT). These openings, while common on many high-volume urban routes, can pose unnecessary risks to motorcyclists.
We’ve conducted motorcycle audits in urban areas across Australasia alongside experienced riders. Time and time again we observe the risks associated with median openings.
Key risk factors include:
– Late Vehicle Movements: Drivers making last-minute turns into median openings, creating sudden hazards for motorcyclists (as per the video).
– Visibility Issues: Vehicles exiting median openings often fail to notice approaching riders, increasing the risk of collisions.
By identifying these challenges during road safety audits, we can advocate for targeted solutions, such as closing or modifying median openings, to improve safety for motorcyclists and all road users.
