Human brains are incredible, but they have limits – especially when processing large amounts of information when driving. Research shows that as a driver’s workload increases, their performance decreases. This is particularly true when navigating roads cluttered with excessive signage.
Studies (Bendak & Al-Saleh, 2010; Lyu et al., 2017; Bañares et al., 2018) highlight a strong correlation between decreased driving performance and increased cognitive load caused by tasks such as reading and interpreting traffic signs. As the volume of information rises, so does the difficulty in processing it, which leads to slower reaction times and greater potential for error.
The graph below illustrates this relationship: the more information drivers must process, the more their reaction time increases. In real-world terms, this could mean the difference between avoiding a hazard and a collision.
To enhance road safety, limit road signs to those that are absolutely necessary. Reducing visual clutter helps drivers focus on the most critical information, improving their ability to make safe and timely decisions.
