Most road signs in Australia are mounted on galvanized steel tube posts, typically C250L0 (or sometimes lighter C350L0). These posts are designed to deform on impact, reducing vehicle damage and protecting occupants.

However, the risk for cyclists and motorcyclists is a different story. While these poles are considered “frangible” for cars and trucks, they are a significant hazard to vulnerable road users.

When there’s a risk of cyclists or motorcyclists striking these signs, we need to consider:

  • Is the sign necessary? Can we remove it or consolidate signs or posts?
  • If the sign is essential, consider using a more frangible pole
