One reason crashes between passenger vehicles at roundabouts tend to be less severe than those at traditional square intersections is the angle of conflict.
At roundabouts, the angles of vehicle collisions are typically much shallower compared to the 90-degree impacts that can occur at signalised intersections. This shallower angle allows more of the crash energy to dissipate into the environment, often causing vehicles to glance off each other rather than absorbing the full force of the impact. This design feature is one of several reasons why roundabouts are considered a Safe System Solution for passenger vehicles.
