How do you get road designers to better understand the needs of heavy vehicles? Put them in the cab of course.
Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd. & the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), with support from the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), have just finished delivering a round of the Road Design for Heavy Vehicles training course across Australia.
This unique hands-on practical training program covered the needs of heavy vehicles and how to best manage them on the road network. The first half of the day explored unique heavy vehicle road design issues including swept paths, sight distances, interaction with vulnerable road users, geometric design elements, rollover prevention and other road safety issues. In the second part of the day a key feature of the course was the practical component where course participants got in the cabin of a truck whilst a licensed heavy vehicle driver highlighted some common areas of concern.
Thanks to the fantastic truck drivers that volunteered their time to help engineers and road designers build safer roads for all road users.
