Congratulations to Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads (DRR) on winning an IRF Global Road Achievement Award in the safety category. This outstanding achievement is for their Integrated Road Safety Management System Development Project.
Over the last four years, Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd., VicRoads and iRAP have been working with the DRR to build their road safety capacity. Australian road safety knowledge has been adapted to suit the roads, technology and culture in Thailand.
DRR has now treated over 1,300 sites using techniques taught during Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd/VicRoads training courses. The work resulted in a 75% per cent reduction in fatal crashes at the treated sites.
The DRR has demonstrated how capacity building in road safety provides powerful results. We hope that other low-and middle-income countries can learn from the DRR and follow a similar approach.
