A ute catches fire following an incident and, within seconds, someone is sprinting in with a fire extinguisher and has the fire under control.
It’s a great little example of one of the most overlooked parts of the Safe System: Post-Crash Care.
Post-Crash Care is much, much more than the ambulance response times.
It includes:
- detecting that an incident has occurred
- someone (or the vehilce) being able to call for help
- accurate location and information getting to emergency services
- access for fire, police and ambulance
- immediate scene management and preventing secondary incidents
- bystanders and first aiders
- rescue and extraction
- response times and transport to appropriate trauma care
- medical expertise, equipment and treatment technology
- hospital and trauma facilities
- rehabilitation and recovery
- psychological support and care for families
- ultimately, helping people return to their lives
Minutes, and sometimes seconds, matter. WHO notes that delays in detecting a crash and providing care can increase injury severity, with even short delays potentially making the difference between life and death.
And the job doesn’t finish when someone leaves hospital. Effective post-crash response extends to physical and psychological recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration into work, family and community life.
