A Red X means the lane is closed. There could be a broken-down vehicle, emergency services or road workers in the lane ahead.
Yet studies of UK managed motorways have found that between 6% and 8% of drivers continue into closed lanes. Individual lane closures have recorded even higher levels of non-compliance.
While most drivers understand that a Red X means the lane is closed, awareness of the legal requirement is much lower. National Highways found only 75% of drivers knew it is illegal to drive in a lane displaying a Red X, meaning one in four drivers were unaware they were committing an offence.
