I just played this video as part of our interactive crash analysis in the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly course. It’s an interesting example of how people view a crash differently. I for one have a very strong view that this is a significant system issue. Let me explain:
This is a filter turn. The red car is blocking the sight line for the blue car turning (dynamic visual obstruction). Thus, the blue car either has to wait until the view is clear and then go, or tries to sneak out and then makes a guess at it. The system is set up to make them fail. Pushing all that responsibility to the driver is unreasonable.
I’m thankful that the Victorian Government now has a policy position that requires all new traffic signals to be fully controlled (red arrow). And only if proven that the area is low risk then it could be considered for release to filter turns.
I cringe as I think about all the sites from the past where it was the other way around – i.e. start with filter turns and when enough people are killed and seriously injured we might be able to get a fully controlled turn.
Over to you LinkedIn people – what are your thoughts about this crash?
