Of course we should continue doing everything we can to prevent crashes from occurring in the first place, but our responsibility doesn’t end there.

Our duty is to create a transport system where a simple mistake does not result in death or life changing injury.

That’s exactly what we see here.

If the speeds had been higher, if the crossing had not been raised, the forces involved in the collision would have been much greater and the outcome could have been very different.

Raised pedestrian crossings do more than reduce the likelihood of a crash occurring. They also significantly reduce the severity of those crashes that still happen despite our best efforts.

Humans will always make mistakes. The Safe System is about minimising those mistakes, but ALSO managing those that still happen.

Just raise it.
