The 5 most controversial things that happened at this week’s Roads & Streets Trivia Night here in Auckland…

  1. During the Crash Reduction Factor Battle round, there was a showdown between ‘Advanced Cycle Stop Boxes’ and ‘on-road cycle lanes’. The source was the NZTA Crash Estimation Compendium (May 2025), and the winner was the Advanced Cycle Stop Box (much to the disgust of many).
  2. The definition of a 2 for 1 deal on socks at the Trivia Prize Shop. 🧦
  3. Why the bartender knew that a MASH crash test has higher impact capacity than NCHRP350.
  4. 🐷⚖️ = Hamilton or Picton?
  5. NZTA awarding a Crash Reduction Factor of 0% for a zebra crossing. That’s right – not a safety feature at all. (But note: raise the crossing and the crash reduction factor skyrockets, showing the huge advantage of raised pedestrian crossings.)

Awesome night. Thanks to the 60+ transport fanatics who came along for the food, fun and frivolities. Great representation from across the Aotearoa professional transport sector, including NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Auckland Transport, Flow Transportation Specialists, Abley, AECOM, Aurecon, WSP, Beca, Harrison Grierson, Stantec, and the University of Auckland.

And of course, the awesome and expanding Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd New Zealand team and our partners on this one Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau (Transport Group).

So much fun.
Until next time.

P.S. There seems to be a much higher mean knowledge level in pavement technology here in New Zealand than in Australia (well, at least with the crowds I hang out with).
