When we talk about roadside safety, frangible light poles often get the attention. But there is a specific Road Design Note in Victoria that deals with frangible sign posts (RDN 06-09).
This note makes it clear that only approved frangible systems should be used on the declared road network where a frangible post is required.
These are not just “breakable posts”. They are engineered systems designed to:
- Break or yield on impact
- Reduce deceleration forces on occupants
- Lower the severity of run off road crashes
Some of these systems are also crash tested and assessed to MASH, meaning they have been evaluated under contemporary crash testing protocol used across Australia and New Zealand.

Are these frangible for motorcyclists?
No.
