Was just looking back at past Safe System Snippets. This is number 11 of 537. I like it because it just tells the story about speed without too much complication. The bigger the fall the harder the impact.
Of course we couldn’t resist a bit of physics in there too:
𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 = ½ 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘹 𝘝𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺²
–> Kinetic energy increases with the square of speed.
In energy terms, travelling at:
𝟲𝟬 𝗸𝗺/𝗵 is similar to a fall from about 𝟭𝟰 𝗺
𝟴𝟬 𝗸𝗺/𝗵 is about 𝟮𝟱 𝗺
𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗸𝗺/𝗵 is about 𝟰𝟬 𝗺
(Note: this is an energy comparison only. Real crashes depend on how that energy is dissipated.)
Check out the original Snippet here.
