Finishing off the week in Washington, D.C. I had a brilliant catch-up with David Zipper.
If you’re in DC and care about road safety and sensible transport, you make time to see this man.
Apart from coining the term ‘Car Bloat’, authoring countless articles, contributing to and hosting podcasts many of us listen to, and shaping global mobility debates, I had it on good authority that he is also a genuinely fun guy.
Was not disappointed.
A world-class thinker across urban transport, road safety planning and transport economics. And generous with his time.
We powered through topics including:
Transport planning and land use
Societal biases in road safety Seeing past the safety hype surrounding robotaxis Biomechanics of injury and vehicle design What Yank Tanks might do if they keep multiplying on Australian streets Congestion pricing and road user charging (I didn’t contribute much here, but Zipper is clearly an expert and energised by this space)
If you are not familiar with his work, I suggest diving into his writing in Bloomberg, the Financial Times and his newsletter Paved with Good Intentions.
His latest news is that he is writing a book with MIT Press, exploring congestion pricing and the politics of who gets to use urban streets and who pays.
If mobility, safety and technology are your thing, his newsletter is well worth subscribing to. Check it out here.
Great conversation. Sharp thinking. Good coffee (yes, that’s right – good coffee in the USA)… and yes, good fun.
(no idea what the dog-man in the background is doing)
