This video aggravates us because it was foreseeable.

The layout is a major contributor to this crash. Not bad drivers. A bad system that allowed this design onto a public roadway.

The geometry reinforces a straight through movement at speed.

Then introduces a major change with very late warning.

We regularly remind Road Safety Audit students in our courses that geometry speaks far louder than signs or line marking. If the road feels like a through movement, drivers will act like it is one.

(also, relying on minimal protection, such as a few scattered sand barrels at the end of a high speed approach, is not Safe System thinking).

This layout actively misleads.

This crash, and the many others we are confident would have occurred here, were entirely avoidable with better design and effective Road Safety Auditing.
