The new process for calculating roadside risk (in accordance with Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6) involves working out the exposure, likelihood and severity of a crash. For the severity, roadside hazards are categorised into ‘significant hazards’, ‘less significant hazards’, and ‘minor hazards’. While there are many roadside hazards listed in the 2022 Austroads Guide, trees can be found in each category depending on their trunk diameter at chest height:

Significant Hazard: isolated trees with trunk diameters of 250 mm and larger

Less significant hazards: isolated trees with trunk diameters of 150 to 200 mm

Minor hazards: isolated trees with trunk diameters of 75 to 100 mm
