Raised crossings are a proven Safe System treatment. The real question is how to squeeze the absolute most value from them? What shapes driver compliance at these sites? What can we adjust when the yield rates are not where they should be?

We were engaged to investigate several raised crossings around Melbourne. The work revealed some clear outcomes: Raised crossings outperform at grade crossings. Factors that drive non compliance include cluttered and intense street environments, nearby side streets, high traffic volumes and the grade and height of the ramps. There are many improvement options available. Some are simple sign and line changes. Others involve more significant adjustments to the street cross section. Each reduces risk to varying degrees.

We love partnering with people who want outcomes that are safe, equitable and technically sound. This was a great project that will directly improve a number of crossings and help the wider industry deliver better designs in the future.
